Synopsis

ADIRA'S SECRET is a memoir, fantasy and allegory about a strong woman who tries to help her sister rise above their difficult childhood.

ADIRA'S SECRET takes place during the 1940s-60s, mostly within the protagonist’s memories and fantasies, where and when the sisters were raised in subsidized housing.

Sisters ADIRA and TOWER make the best of difficult childhood circumstance. And, until play’s end, ADIRA’s secret is kept.

ADIRA’S SECRET is an allegory that speaks to…

  • how we as individuals and families cope with stigma, loss and grief,

  • circumstance and attitudes that oppress the vulnerable, those with supposed problems,

  • how such problems in fact indict our society and culture, and

  • how time, changed perception may bring hope.

One reviewer surmised: "ADIRA’S SECRET tackles loss, vulnerability, a child's lack of control, mental illness and being haunted by one's past. Told in poetic language, that flow goes from how children feel at school dances, to not being accepted, to dealing with poverty, the inability to do more and the pain that haunts us from that."

ADIRA’S SECRET is a…

  • One act, 50-minute play or podcast

  • A monologue, with dream-fantasy sequences
